Looking to bring a foreign executive to run your company in Brazil? There is a visa for that — and more than one option, depending on your investment profile.
The permanent visa is granted to foreigners who come to Brazil to hold a position of trust in a Brazilian company with foreign shareholder participation. Here are the four pathways:
Pathway 1 — Investment of BRL 600,000 (via legal entity)
Applicable when a foreign legal entity designates an administrator, manager, or director for the Brazilian company. The visa is granted upon a minimum investment of BRL 600,000 (Normative Resolution 127/2017, updated by CNIG/MJSP Resolution 49/2024).
- The visa belongs to the investing shareholder, not to the designated executive.
- It is possible to replace the executive with another foreigner without making a new investment.
- Renewal is guaranteed as long as the investment is maintained.
Pathway 2 — Investment of BRL 150,000 with job creation
Also for legal entities. Lower investment, but with a condition: the business plan must provide for the creation of at least 10 jobs within the following 2 years. If the plan is not fulfilled, the visa will not be renewed.
Pathway 3 — Individual investor (BRL 500,000 or BRL 150,000 for innovation)
For the individual shareholder relocating to Brazil to invest directly:
- BRL 500,000: equity investment in a Brazilian company, with no job creation requirement (Normative Resolution 13/2017, updated by CNIG/MJSP Resolution 49/2024).
- BRL 150,000: for innovation, basic or applied scientific or technological research activities, with additional requirements (incubation, technology park, accelerators, etc.).
Pathway 4 — Real Estate Investment (Brazil Golden Visa)
There is a fourth pathway, less well-known but highly relevant for business executives who wish to establish permanent residence in Brazil: the permanent visa through real estate investment. This modality requires the acquisition of urban property at the following minimum values:
- BRL 1,000,000: for properties located in the South, Southeast, and Central-West regions.
- BRL 700,000: for properties located in the North and Northeast regions.
This modality is especially attractive for foreign investors seeking to simultaneously acquire a real estate asset and establish legal residence in Brazil. Specific conditions should be verified with a specialist, as complementary requirements may vary depending on the investor’s profile.
Note: upon obtaining fiscal residence in Brazil, the executive becomes subject to Brazilian Income Tax obligations. Brazil has double taxation treaties with over 25 countries, including Spain, Argentina, Chile, Portugal, and others.
